The utilities are installing smart meters and natural gas meter modules two-way wireless devises that de- tail hourly power usage information and meter status across their sprawling upstate customer base that combined includes more than 1 million electric services and 500,000 natural gas hook-ups.
All NYSEG and customers will receive smart meters unless they choose to opt out of the upgrade. In- stallations have begun and will con- tinue at least through 2025. Approximately 460,000 smart me- ters have been installed so far across NYSEG and according to spokesperson Shelby Cohen. What do you have to do to get a smart meter? Not much, actually. Postcards are usually sent out a few weeks in ad- vance, alerting customers that smart meter trucks will be in the neighbor- hood.
Workers will knock when they arrive, but no one has to be there un- less the meter is inside or to access. All contractor vehicles are marked with a company logo and installers will carry photo ID verifying they are au- thorized contractors. Installation takes just minutes, but there may be a brief interruption of power. A successful installation will be by a door hanger on the day of the upgrade. If there are any prob- lems gaining access to a meter, contact information will be left behind to schedule a better time.
