How much money do I need to invest monthly?
Investing 15% of your income is generally a good rule of thumb to meet your long-term goals. Even if you can't afford to invest that much today, you can still start investing with what you can afford. Your investment amount may fluctuate as your cash flow changes, but staying consistent can pay off in the long run.
“Ideally, you'll invest somewhere around 15%–25% of your post-tax income,” says Mark Henry, founder and CEO at Alloy Wealth Management. “If you need to start smaller and work your way up to that goal, that's fine. The important part is that you actually start.”
If you were to invest $200 per month over the course of the next 30 years, that would equate to a total investment of $72,000. That's significant, but it's through the effects of compounding that would get your portfolio to a more than $1 million valuation.
Investing $100 per month, with an average return rate of 10%, will yield $200,000 after 30 years. Due to compound interest, your investment will yield $535,000 after 40 years. These numbers can grow exponentially with an extra $100. If you make a monthly investment of $200, your 30-year yield will be close to $400,000.
The truth is that most investors won't have the money to generate $1,000 per month in dividends; not at first, anyway. Even if you find a market-beating series of investments that average 3% annual yield, you would still need $400,000 in up-front capital to hit your targets. And that's okay.
Investing $500 per month is a lot for many people. But by reducing your spending in some areas, you'd be surprised at how much you can set aside with a proper budget. With enough time and a proper investment, this simple strategy could even turn $500 per month into $1 million.
A $100 monthly investment doesn't seem like a lot, but when you put this money into the market, it earns returns. If you earn 10%, in a year, your $100 initial investment would be worth $110.00. Next year, you would earn 10% not on $100, but instead on $110, so you'd end up with $121.00.
Years Invested | Balance At the End of the Period |
---|---|
10 | $102,422 |
20 | $379,684 |
30 | $1,130,244 |
40 | $3,162,040 |
Having an emergency fund of 3-6 months of living expenses by age 25 can help provide financial stability and helps you weather unexpected expenses. Starting retirement savings early, even small amounts, allows compound interest to work its magic.
Saving a million dollars in five years requires an aggressive savings plan. Suppose you're starting from scratch and have no savings. You'd need to invest around $13,000 per month to save a million dollars in five years, assuming a 7% annual rate of return and 3% inflation rate.
What happens if you save $100 dollars a month for 40 years?
A $100 monthly investment over 40 years could leave you more than $500,000 richer -- if you choose the right investments, that is.
But by depositing an additional $100 each month into your savings account, you'd end up with $29,648 after 10 years, when compounded daily.
You plan to invest $100 per month for 30 years and expect a 6% return. In this case, you would contribute $36,000 over your investment timeline. At the end of the term, your bond portfolio would be worth $97,451. With that, your portfolio would earn more than $61,000 in returns during your 30 years of contributions.
Dividend-paying Stocks
Shares of public companies that split profits with shareholders by paying cash dividends yield between 2% and 6% a year. With that in mind, putting $250,000 into low-yielding dividend stocks or $83,333 into high-yielding shares will get your $500 a month.
To generate $500 a month in passive income you may need to invest between $83,333 and $250,000, depending on the asset and investment type you select. In addition to yield, you'll want to consider safety, liquidity and convenience when selecting the investments you'll employ to provide monthly passive income.
For example, if an investment scheme promises an 8% annual compounded rate of return, it will take approximately nine years (72 / 8 = 9) to double the invested money.
As a result, the broad-market index has an excellent historical track record of generating wealth. Over its history, the S&P 500 has generated an average annual return of 9%, including re-invested dividends. At that rate, even a middle-class income is enough to become a millionaire over time.
Rate of return | 10 years | 20 years |
---|---|---|
4% | $72,000 | $178,700 |
6% | $79,000 | $220,700 |
8% | $86,900 | $274,600 |
10% | $95,600 | $343,700 |
According to Ramsey's tweet, investing $100 per month for 40 years gives you an account value of $1,176,000. Ramsey's assumptions include a 12% annual rate of return, which some critics have labeled as optimistic given that the long-term average annual return of the S&P 500 index is closer to 10%.
Contributing $50 a month to an investment account can help create impressive savings, even at a moderate 5% annual growth. It's a common myth that you need a few thousand dollars to begin investing.
What if I invest $200 a month for 20 years?
If you can invest $200 each and every month and achieve a 10% annual return, in 20 years you'll have more than $150,000 and, after another 20 years, more than $1.2 million. Your actual rate of return may vary, and you'll also be affected by taxes, fees and other influences.
Investing $1,000 a month for 20 years would leave you with around $687,306. The specific amount you end up with depends on your returns -- the S&P 500 has averaged 10% returns over the last 50 years. The more you invest (and the earlier), the more you can take advantage of compound growth.
The table below shows the present value (PV) of $10,000 in 20 years for interest rates from 2% to 30%. As you will see, the future value of $10,000 over 20 years can range from $14,859.47 to $1,900,496.38.
“If it's the first $500 you've ever saved, you should put it into a checking or savings account and keep doing that until you've saved enough for an emergency fund of 6 months living expenses,” according to Joe Pelusi, a financial advisor with Green Investment Strategies.
Most American households have at least $1,000 in checking or savings accounts. But only about 12% have more than $100,000 in checking and savings.
