Is it risky to have money in Robinhood?
Robinhood is a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corp. (SIPC). This means that any loss of an investor's securities (e.g., stocks and bonds) and cash held by Robinhood is protected up to $500,000 in the event the firm fails or goes out of business. This includes up to $250,000 protection for cash holdings.
Your securities and cash are protected by SIPC
Robinhood Financial LLC and Robinhood Securities, LLC are both members of SIPC, which protects securities for customers of its members up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for claims for cash).
Though the new 5.00% APY rate is competitive, the best high-yield savings accounts in the country pay even better—from 5.25% to 5.40% APY, with no subscription required. Robinhood customers without Gold membership will earn just 1.50% APY on uninvested cash.
Although third-quarter revenue rose 29% to $467 million, it fell short of the $480 million analysts were predicting. Revenue was hurt by a 13% decline in third-quarter transaction revenue tied to stock trading, compared with the same period last year. The stock was last down more than 14%.
Yes, some people have gotten rich from Robinhood. For example, one Robinhood user turned $250,000 into $400 million by investing in Tesla stock. However, it's important to note that these are the exception, not the rule. The vast majority of Robinhood users do not make money, and many lose money.
Plus, users with an upgraded Gold plan can earn a competitive rate on cash balances. But Robinhood still falls short in a few key areas — including a total lack of mutual funds, limited account types and unclear markups on cryptocurrency — when compared to full-service brokerages.
Type | Deposits | Transaction limit |
---|---|---|
Originated ACH | $50,000 or $250,000 daily | 5 deposits, 5 withdrawals |
Non-originated ACH | $250,000 daily | N/A |
Moneysend | $5,000 | $5,000 weekly |
ATM | $510 | $510 daily, $5,000 monthly |
Saving is definitely safer than investing, though it will likely not result in the most wealth accumulated over the long run. Here are just a few of the benefits that investing your cash comes with: Investing products such as stocks can have much higher returns than savings accounts and CDs.
The 5.0% APY rate is 8x higher than the national average savings rate*, making it one of the best available. All eligible Robinhood Gold customers have their uninvested brokerage account cash automatically “swept,” or moved, into deposit accounts at a network of program banks.
It's a good rule of thumb to prioritize saving over investing if you don't have an emergency fund or if you'll need the cash within the next few years. If there are funds you won't need for at least five years, that money may be a good candidate for investing.
Why are users leaving Robinhood?
Why is everyone trashing Robinhood? Robinhood claims to be for the retail investor and says they are pro democratizing the financial markets. They offer commission free trades. However they get paid by providing trading detail to the market makers and hedge funds thus putting retail investors at a huge disadvantage.
Over the past twelve months, Net Deposits were $17.3 billion, which translates to a growth rate of 27% relative to AUC at the end of Q3 2022. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) increased by 27% year-over-year to $80. Cash and cash equivalents totaled $4.9 billion compared with $6.2 billion at the end of Q3 2022.
Instant Bank Transfers (Withdrawals) Up to 1.75% (min. fee of $2) Fee charged for instant transfers to external bank account. ATM withdrawal (in- network) $2.50 “In-network” refers to the Allpoint and Moneypass networks. Locations can be found at https://robinhood.com/us/en/support/articles/move -money/.
Some of the most common fees that cause customers to have an account deficit are Robinhood Gold fees and fees associated with American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). You can find all of your past Robinhood Gold fees and interest payments in the app in History.
7 million retail investors have left Robinhood in a year as stocks and cryptocurrencies plummet. Robinhood's monthly active users plunged 34% to 14 million over the past year. Retail investors are leaving the platform as stocks and cryptocurrencies plummet.

You should only provide your SSN to Robinhood if you are confident that they are a legitimate company and that they will take appropriate measures to protect your information.

- Click on "Transfer to Your Bank" under the Transfers section.
Robinhood uses Plaid to allow its users to link their bank accounts to the app. Robinhood doesn't get this information. It goes only to Plaid, which is a financial intermediary with a good reputation for security. It's mostly safe to provide your bank password in this instance.
Following a sale in your brokerage or retirement account for equities or options, the transaction usually needs to settle before you can withdraw the proceeds to your bank account. The settlement period for equities is the trade date plus 2 trading days (T+2), sometimes referred to as regular-way settlement.
Is it worth investing in Robinhood?
Robinhood is well known for its abundant fee-free services, such as commission-free options and cryptocurrency trading that most other brokers charge for. However, it does offer a premium platform known as Robinhood Gold. Robinhood Gold offers some benefits that can make the cost well worth it.
TD Ameritrade
Another leading Robinhood alternative is TD Ameritrade. This broker is actually owned by Charles Schwab, not TD Bank directly, and offers commission-free stock and ETF trades. It also has 24/7 customer service, and its customer service, which Robinhood also rolled out in 2021.
$3,000 X 12 months = $36,000 per year. $36,000 / 6% dividend yield = $600,000. On the other hand, if you're more risk-averse and prefer a portfolio yielding 2%, you'd need to invest $1.8 million to reach the $3,000 per month target: $3,000 X 12 months = $36,000 per year.
Dividend stocks are considered safer than high-growth stocks, because they pay cash dividends, helping to limit their volatility but not eliminating it. So dividend stocks will fluctuate with the market but may not fall as far when the market is depressed.
Investment Products
All have higher risks and potentially higher returns than savings products. Over many decades, the investment that has provided the highest average rate of return has been stocks. But there are no guarantees of profits when you buy stock, which makes stock one of the most risky investments.
