Sardinia is well known for its liqueurs, Mirto and Limoncello, made from myrtle and lemons respectively. Mirto is the most popular Sardinian after-dinner drink, ubiquitous on the island in fact. This unique liqueur is made from the native flowering Mirto (or Myrtle) plant, which grows freely on Sardinia.
Mirto (licòre/-i de murta in Sardinian, licòr di mortula in Corsican) is a popular liqueur in the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia, Corsica and Capraia. It is obtained from the myrtle plant through the alcoholic maceration of the berries or a compound of berries and leaves.
Sardinia is home to Cannonau, the local name for Grenache, as well as Vermentino and Carignano, also known as Carignan.

Carciofo spinoso (a special type of artichoke), citrus fruits, melons (cultivated indoors), pomegranates, wild asparagus and fresh chilli are all available to buy, as are some other Sardinian fruits and vegetables that are not easy to find even in Sardinia.
Ichnusa Beer
This beer is becoming so popular that you can now find it in many different bars across Europe thanks to its acquisition by Heineken. The name comes from the ancient Latin name for Sardinia, Ichnuso being a word that means foot, referencing the shape of the island.
Sardinia offers a wide range of liqueurs and distilllates, but the main product is the "Liquore di Mirto" (Myrtle liqueur), the king of the Sardinian typical spirits, obtained only from fresh and wild Myrtle berries.
Do Sardinians drink wine every day?
Sardinians are famous for their daily consumption of the robust, regional red wine called Cannonau. Cannonau wine has two to three times the level of artery-scrubbing flavonoids as other wines.
Many Sardinians eat a plant-based diet, with very little meat. People in Sardinia tend to eat a very traditional Mediterranean diet, which consists of mostly whole grains, vegetables, dairy products, and not much meat. "The food is beans, greens, and whole grains," Buettner told NBC News in 2019.
The sheep's milk cheese, Pecorino, is without doubt the most famous of the island's cheeses; most notably, pecorino sardo, pecorino romano and fiore sardo. All three are recognised by the European Union as Denominazioe di Origine Protetta (DOP or Protected Designation of Origin) products.
On the contrary, Sardinia is cheaper than most other regions in Italy – the wages here are lower than in most of the country and as a result the costs of living here are lower. It's much cheaper to visit and live than other European and international destinations – think the UK, Scandinavia, but even the US or Canada.

Using the berries and leaves of the myrtle plant, mirto offers a unique tasting experience of intense fruit notes with juniper, mint and eucalyptus, as well as some citrus. First it appears very sweet, followed by a pleasant bitterness. The best way to drink mirto is chilled.
What is a sherry like wine from Sardinia?
Vernaccia di Oristano is a sherry-like fortified wine from Sardinia. In August 1971, it became Sardinia's very first wine to be granted an official DOC. Vernaccia, like Muscat, Malvasia and Clairette, is a name applied to several distinct grape varieties, rather than identifying a single one definitively.
Monica. Among the red grape varieties Monica, along with Cannonau, is one of the most representative of all Sardinian viticulture. Introduced to the island in ancient times, it is now present throughout Sardinia and produces two different DOC wines: Monica di Sardegna and Cagliari Monica.
Grains, citrus, olives, rice, and vegetables of all kinds have been grown here for centuries, and are still produced today. Some varieties are actually “heirlooms” and descendants of native or long grown crops.

However, that certainly doesn't mean you should drink too much Cannonou wine. Sardinians drink on average three or four small glasses a day spread throughout the day with every meal, including breakfast!
