What months can you swim in Sardinia?
The best time to visit Sardinia is indisputably in the fall.
Unless you're a fan of scorching temperatures and holiday crowds, the best time to visit Sardinia is the shoulder months of April to May and September to October. It's still warm enough to swim in the sea and infinitely better for taking to the country's biking and hiking trails.
If you enjoy hot perfect sunny days the best time to visit Sardinia is between June and August. The hottest month of the year is July with an average daily maximum of 32 C and an average low of 21 C. The coolest month of the year is January with an average daily maximum of 14 C and an average low of 6 C.
Within Italy itself, northern coastal destinations like Cinque Terre might be too cold to swim in May, but in places like Sicily or Calabria, you might even be able to jump in at the end of April! With so many beaches in Italy and so much time to enjoy them, let's be honest, you can be a little picky.
Whilst you may not be able to swim in the sea or sunbathe, Sardinia in the winter is the ideal time to enjoy the island by foot. Walking routes along the coast are beautiful and rewarding at this time of year.
Sardinia Weather in May
The island typically receives an average of 40mm of rainfall during this month, with occasional light showers. The sea temperature is also pleasant, averaging around 19°C, making it perfect for swimming and water activities.
It's a particularly good time of year to swim in the sea, with water temperatures around 21 C.
Whilst Sardinia is a very popular beach destination in the summer, in April the average sea temperature is only around 15°C which most people will find too cold for swimming. You'll be fine dipping your toes in the water however, and those who are used to cold-water swimming shouldn't find the ocean too chilly.
- Neptune's Grotto, for an otherworldly cave. ...
- Argentiera, for a mining ghost town. ...
- La Pelosa Beach, for the most beautiful beach in Sardinia. ...
- Su Nuraxi di Barumini, for ancient archeology. ...
- Gola di Gorropu, for hiking in canyons. ...
- Mamoiada, for a unique cultural carnival experience. ...
- Castelsardo, for a picture-perfect pretty town.
Badesi water temperatures peak in the range 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F) on around the 15th of August and are at their lowest on about the 1st of March, in the range 13 to 14°C (55 to 57°F).
What is the hottest month in Sardinia Italy?
August is the hottest month in Sardinia with an average temperature of 25°C (77°F) and the coldest is January at 10°C (50°F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 12 in July. The wettest month is June with an average of 80mm of rain.
Compared to Corsica, Sardinia is much more developed – though there are quieter, wilder patches to explore for those who are willing to put in a bit more effort. It's also home to several significant archaeological sights, perfect for those interested in archaeology.
July is when disease outbreaks most likely to occur in lakes and oceans.
It's generally best to wait until your baby is around 6 months old before starting swimming lessons. New mothers should not go swimming until at least 6 weeks after the birth, or when you have stopped bleeding.
1. Cala Brandinchi. Known as 'Little Tahiti' for its incredible clear waters, and recognised as one of the most famous beaches in Sardinia, Cala Brandinchi makes it onto any list showcasing Sardinia's best beaches.
Though Sicily has its beaches and resorts, they tend not to be as developed as you might find on Sardinia. Historical site abound. The interior too is rugged, and day trips could involve nature, but also offer more established cities and towns. It really is a matter of personal preference!
The average high's 22ºC in October, so it's still nice and warm. You should bring some warmer things for the evenings though as it can get quite cool at night. The sea temperature's 21ºC, while humidity's low.
How much does a week in Sardinia cost? If you average around €120 per night for a place to stay, plus an extra €100 euro per person for food, activities and transportation per day, then a week in Sardinia will likely cost around €1540 per person.
Water is exchanged at the slowest of rates making the med as clear as a swarovski crystal. Limited water exchange = limited food for tiny organisms called phytoplankton aka algae, and it's these little dudes who play the lead role in water clarity. The Mediterranean is classified as “oligotrophic”.
The average high reaches 26ºC in September, which has pleasant evenings that cool to 17ºC. The sea temperature's 23ºC, while humidity's low. Average rainfall's 24mm over eight rainy days, and you can expect there to be eight hours of sunshine from the 12 hours of daylight each day.
Is the water clear in Sardinia?
Sea breezes, mediterranean smells, white and pink sandy beaches, crystal clear waters will perfectly mix with local dining experiences and charming accomodations.
Days are usually hot with balmy evenings, so visitors should pack light and cool clothing. The average daily maximum is 31 C and the average daily minimum is 20 C.
If you visit in March or November you can expect the weather to be similar to the other “in-between months”; a pleasant out of season heat without being unbearable, but with an increased risk of very windy or rainy days and with water a bit too chilly to properly enjoy swimming in the sea.
The average high in Sardinia is 22ºC in May, which drops to quite a cool 12ºC at night. The sea temperature is 17ºC, while humidity's low. There's 19mm of rain over nine days, and you can expect 14 hours of daylight with nine hours of sunshine each day.
